Your device can give critical information to a user or other machines which can give a user a rich experience that was once not possible.

For example, Imagine a realtor installs a sensor on a “Take Flyer” box outside a prospective home. The realtor previously only knew the interest based on how many flyers were left, but with a sensor that detects every time the lid has been opened. Now the realtor can collect important information about what time of day people are interested. The realtor could potentially use this information in many ways, such as determining when to best host the next open house for maximum foot traffic of interested buyers.
